It goes almost without saying that to have a bicycle tour you need to have a bicycle or does it?
It's amusing to do this on a bicycle page but I want to point out that people have actually used unicycles to tour too!
Lars Clausen is the rider of the unicycle in the picture to the right. The picture was taken during his continuous tour through 50 of the states in the United States of America.
His tour set two world records, numerous adventures and an excellent book called "One Wheel Many Spokes - USA by Unicycle" that I enjoyed tremendously about a year ago when I first read through it.
Lars provided this picture at my request to provide another example of a successful touring setup.
I should point out that Lars has also toured using a more standard bicycle in the past.
GUINNESS RECORDS:
I enjoyed his book tremendously!
You can find a preview of the book as well as more information on his adventures at his website.
Another cyclist who also wrote a series of very entertaining books is Bernie Howgate.
I haven't yet read his book about cycling around the world by bicycle but I have tremenously enjoyed two of his other books including one where he rode a singlespeed rickshaw across Canada.
His writing is very powerful. In fact his ability to convey his experiences was strong enough to encourage me to try a mini-kayaking adventure during my Round Lake Huron tour (the second book of his I read was about kayaking along the east coast of Labradour).
I currently have his other two books on order!
I'll finish off my non-standard examples by mentioning a touring site that provides a tour report about using a Pennyfarthing to successfully tour from Lands End to John O’Groats. I have requested a picture from the author so hopefully I will have one to post up here soon!
By the way I guess I should mention that the two authors are listed on this page not due to some sort of commercial relationship with the website but rather because I enjoyed their books and I requested permission to use their pictures for this website.
The pages that follow this one will go into much more detail about the more typical bikes that are used on tour along with the equipment that tends to also be deployed although as all three of these fine people have shown it is indeed possible to use more unique equipment and complete a tour quite nicely!
