Feldmann Family Interview Two - Fritz Feldmann

The Feldmann family has departed on their great family bicycle touring adventure across Canada. On a regular basis I will be checking in with the family to see how their tour is going and to ask them some questions about their adventure.

This time the interview is with Fritz and the topic is focused on his impressions after 15 days on the road.

Leaving a home that you've lived in for 12 years to cross the country by bicycle must have been an interesting experience for you. What thoughts went through your head as you prepared to leave?

Leaving the house was not a problem to me. It is just a safety shelter. I have never put too much materialistic thoughts and ideas into the house. I do not need to keep up with the Jones's.

I miss puttering around and seeing plants grow in my garden.

You've been on the road now for 15 days. Describe the feeling and routine of a typical day on the road.

A typical day is waking up with the birds. Out of the tent by 6:00 a.m. Nature calls next, and then breakfast cooking. Porridge and tea for Stefan, Tristan and Cynthia. For me it's chow mein noodle soup and tea.

Tent taking down and packed up during cooking will take us about an hour and a half. Usually takes us two hours from getting up to leaving the campsite.

I'm usually cycling in the lead, followed by Stefan or Tristan, then Cynthia. During the ride we eat whenever we feel like it. I eat a nut mixture, the others seem to live on cereal bars.

Lunch is whatever we can pick up on the way, like cheese, sausage, raw veggies etc. We usually finish riding around 4-5 pm. I or Stefan starts supper. Tristan gets out all the sleeping bags and therma-rests and he fills up the water bottles and camels. The other two people set up the two tents.

After supper we lock everything up, and we are in bed by 8:30 p.m.

Any exciting discoveries so far?

The afternoon we spent at the Hutterite community. What a simple lifestyle for a hard working group of people.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I had lived in BC for the past 18 years, and I am really enjoying the rolling hills of the prairies.
